Wisconsin women's basketball coach Marisa Moseley and seniors Halle Douglass and Brooke Schramek talk following the Badgers' loss to Saint Louis in the Great 8 round of the WNIT on April 1 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

A former University of Wisconsin women’s basketball starter is returning close to home.

Sania Copeland, a Kansas City, Kansas native, announced Monday on Instagram that she is transferring to Kansas.

She joins a Kansas team that finished 20-13, including 11-7 in the Big 12. The Jayhawks reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three seasons before falling to top-seeded Southern Cal 73-55. The Jayhawks have three straight 20-win seasons.

The 5-foot-7 guard is the first Badgers departure this offseason to announce a new home after sheentered the transfer portal April 4. Copeland took on an expanded role this season, appearing in 31 games, including 26 starts.

She averaged 30.4 minutes per game, nearly doubling her time (15.9) on the court as a freshman.

Copeland was fifth on the team in scoring with 7.3 points per game to go along with 2.6 rebounds and 2.1 assists, and scored in double-figures 10 times. She exited Wisconsin’s season-ending 65-60 loss to Saint Louis in the Great 8 round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament early due to injury.

Copeland committed to Wisconsin on April 3, 2022, flipping her original commitment from Missouri State after former Bears coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton was hired as coach at Virginia.

Copeland is one of three Badgers to enter the transfer portal. Reserves Tessa Towers and Sacia Vanderpool have not announced their next steps, though Vanderpool was graduating in three years with a degree in kinesiology
