LensCrafters has been a wholly owned subsidiary of Luxottica (which has since merged with Essilor to form EssilorLuxottica), the largest eyewear company in the world, since 1995.

The organization is accusing EssilorLuxottica of “monopolistic behavior and unfair competition”, with prices having been artificially inflated by up to 1,000%. The French-Italian owner of the Ray-Ban and Oakley eyewear brands has been identified as the “instigator and primary enforcer” of the alleged scheme.

Luxottica also owns EyeMed Vision Care, a managed vision care organization in the United States.

The global eyeglasses industry was worth $105.56 billion in 2020, of which Luxottica controlled 80 percent. The company estimates that over half a billion people worldwide are currently wearing their glasses.

Created in 2018, EssilorLuxottica is the combination of two highly complementary and inspiring companies, Essilor and Luxottica, which used their individual strengths to revolutionize the industry and explore the potential of eyecare and eyewear around the world.

Their factories in Italy and China produce Ray-Ban's entire line of eyewear and Luxottica guarantees the quality of the products from its Chinese factories is in no way compromised; the glasses are made from the same materials, with the same machines.

Luxottica, the renowned eyewear company behind popular brands like Ray-Ban, Chanel, Prada and many others, has recently faced a significant data breach. This breach compromised the personal information of over 800,000 EyeMed and LensCrafters patients in August 2020.

VSP acquired Visionworks, based in San Antonio, in 2019 for an undisclosed amount. Visionworks is one of the biggest optical retail chains in the country, with more than 750 locations nationwide.

Following the contribution by Delfin, the majority shareholder of Luxottica, of its 62.42% stake in Luxottica to Essilor on October 1, 2018, Essilor became the parent company of Luxottica and was renamed EssilorLuxottica.
